Monday Moment: Best laid plans

You didn’t see it coming. This isn’t what was supposed to happen. You didn’t plan for this. Sometimes it’s easy to see how our expectations keep us out of the present moment, and sometimes it isn’t. When you don’t like what’s going on because it’s not the idea you had in mind for how things were going to be, it’s normal to try to fight it. Anger, frustration, disappointment, blame…all of these emotions result from clinging to the idea of your original plan, even when that plan is clearly not playing out.

You know I’m never going to tell you not to feel what you’re feeling. If you don’t, those emotions are just gonna hide somewhere and find their way out later when you least expect – or want – them to. You can make the choice, though, to get tangled up in them and dwell on the future you thought was coming, or move forward in the present that is. You can hold the grudge, be angry, and plot revenge if you really want to. But do you really want to? Is that the present you want to live in?

I mean, it’s Monday and you can’t change that. Stick around long enough, though, and in fewer than 24 hours, it will change itself.

How are you feeling this Friday? Although it doesn’t always feel like it these days, the last day of the workweek is usually synonymous with lightness and fun. Even if your schedule is packed with meetings, the knowledge that you’re about to break free for two whole days is usually cause for celebration, and a great big exhale. Even if you’ve got projects galore and other responsibilities to tend to, at least they feel a little bit more on your terms. A while back, we talked about the times when life puts you on the bench, and tries its best to give you no choice but to take a break. Whether it’s illness, injury, or that particular kind of fatigue that makes you feel like you’re moving through molasses, those are the moments when it’s your job to take care of you. With the pace of our lives these days, we often fight that directive and push through, trying to stay or get back “on track” as soon as possible. Of course, that usually means that getting better takes way longer than it should or needs to, or we end up crashing completely with nothing left in the tank.

If we can’t take care of ourselves when we’re physically injured or depleted, what does that mean about the times when our bodies aren’t giving out? How do we respond when it’s our mind, our heart – or just our being – that is asking us for some TLC? In some ways, those messages can be much easier to dismiss or ignore, but that doesn’t mean they go away or that they aren’t important.  Read More

Monday Moment: Full alignment

Our inspiration this Monday is pretty straightforward, but in some ways, it may also be more easily said (or thought?) than done. Getting the energy of your thoughts, actions and words to align can be tough, and you may not exactly know how to go about it. You definitely know when it’s not the case, though. The best you can do is take a breath, check in with yourself, find where your heart and head connect, and make an effort to be present in that “space” right before you respond, to decide whether what you’re about to do or say aligns with your intention.

Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won’t. Over time, and with mindfulness, those moments of alignment will become more common, though, and before you know it, striking that balance will feel like second nature.
