You probably know you have things to be thankful for, but if you’ve got big plans for your life, it can be hard to stay focused on them. You know you have people in you’re life you’re thankful for, but when they nag you about the things you’re stressed about, it’s hard to remember you love them.

If you’re an ambitious person, striving for your next step is how you stay alive. Avoiding people who drag you down helps keep your mind right (except for that sometimes, when they know you well, they’re just shining a mirror to your beautifully imperfect self…darnit).

So, it is possible to be grateful and ambitious? To love people, and to keep them only as close as you need them to? To receive the lessons you need with an open heart, while protecting your self-worth at the same time?

You’re a pretty smart person. No, don’t try to play humble and say you aren’t. You are, and you know it. Maybe you’re really smart, or even a genius. Regardless, you’re probably better at or happier doing some things over others, and with certain activities, you’re lucky enough to get both. The point is, whether it’s a lot about a few things or a little about lots of things: you’ve got some serious knowledge up in that brain.

I live in the southern U.S., where spring begins in February, and by now it’s already summer. Last week, I traveled to the northern part of the country, and was reminded that the transition happens at different times in different places. No matter the timing, some years it’s a gradual process, full of backslides into full-blown winter followed by surges forward into summer heat, only to drift back into chilly rain, crushing souls along the way. Other years, change happens more quickly and confidently, each step taking us closer to summer without doubt or hesitation.
