Monday Moment: See the light

Beatles Let it Be quote w tag

Sometimes people think of mindfulness as being about letting go of things. Let go of anger and frustration, of ego and self-judgment, of all your thoughts entirely. I mean, go ahead and give that a shot, but speaking as a human being, I think you might find yourself, well…frustrated and angered by the attempt. Not only is getting “over it” a lot harder than you might expect, clearing your mind completely is impossible. That’s not your job here. The idea is to see what’s there – what’s going on within you – and to account for it without responding to it, unless and until you want to.

But stuff’s gonna go on. That’s the difference between you and a robot, although honestly, even the robot’s got a lot going on.

One of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s well-known quotes is, “It is not a matter of letting go. You would if you could. Instead of ‘Let it go,’ we should probably say ‘Let it be.'” Learn to observe, and you will find that there is always a sliver of light – and sometimes a lot more than that – no matter how difficult things may seem, or how painful that Monday alarm clock. It is what it is. Let it be, and keep going.

Monday Moment: Peace in

All I can say is, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to find us a dose of wisdom from this collective font of musical genius. Source aside, there are a lot of reasons to appreciate what George has to say to us this Monday morning. We spend a lot of time up in our heads, thinking about what has happened, what we expect might happen next, and what we think about all of it. We value our thoughts and the emotions that accompany them as true and real, without question. Mindfulness reminds us that they are fleeting experiences, though, and helps us see “beyond” ourselves, in a sense. It helps us access the stillness that we each have inside us that is just beyond the swirl of thoughts, emotions, ideas and concerns, and gives us the space to find a little peace, even if just for a minute or two. The important thing to note is that it’s always there, though, available and accessible with the 3 simple ingredients of your attention, your intention and your breath.

Have a peaceful week… :)

“No-Fail” Friday: Let it be

From Elsa to Taylor, we’ve had no shortage of divas telling us to “let it go” and “shake it off” of late. Such a great concept, isn’t it? If you don’t like what you’re feeling, just ditch it. Easier said than done, especially when it comes to emotions. Today we’re drawing our inspiration from a more old-school lyrical source, as well as from Jon Kabat-Zinn, who is widely credited with bringing mindfulness to western audiences through his work as a medical doctor. JKZ is perhaps a bit more realistic about it: “It’s not a matter of letting go – you would if you could. Instead of ‘let it go,’ we should probably say ‘let it be.’” Which brings us to this weekend’s mindfulness challenge. Read More
