We talk a lot around here about intentional focus, and making the choice through mindfulness to bring your attention back to where it’s wandered off from, once you notice that it’s gone. As you’ve heard me say many times before, the coming back is the meditation. Why does this matter? Because your focused attention is powerful. Energy flows where intention – and attention – go. Everything is made of energy — things, people, and events. When you notice that your attention has gone to envisioning the worst, notice. Come back. Choose to direct your mental energy to a more positive potential outcome. When it wanders off again, notice, and come back.
Having a worrisome thought is a normal part of being human. You can’t help what pops up in your brain. You can choose what you hang on to, though, and whether you want that thought to evolve into a pattern or even a habit of focusing on what you don’t want to happen. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Your mindful, focused attention is a superpower.
